Halloween is the time of year where you can dig deep into your imagination and let your creativity soar. It’s a time where you can become someone (or something) you’re not, whether that’s a zombie astronaut or a famous celebrity. But for bookworms like myself, maybe it’s a time that you can become that one character in your favorite book that you’ve always wanted to be. There are thousands upon thousands of characters in every genre of books, and I’ve compiled a list of book characters to dress up as for Halloween to show off your bookish side.
- Harry Potter
Of course the boy who lived had to be the first character on this list. Sure, it may be a cliché costume, but it’s a good costume. Everyone will know who you are, and it’s so simple. All you have to do is grab some round glasses and throw on some Gryffindor garb, maybe get yourself a wand and mess up your hair a little, and you’re golden. And if you don’t have the right hair, it isn’t hard to find a black wig somewhere. The Harry Potter series is full of plenty other interesting characters, so if Harry is a little too popular for you, don’t hesitate to choose another favorite character!
- Katniss Everdeen
Here’s another very popular character, and one that is definitely fun to dress up as. Well, if your definition of fun is merciless killing of teenagers in a fight to the death. Katniss is a warrior, a symbol, and dressing up like her for Halloween is sure to make you feel strong. The costume isn’t quite as simple if you want it to be perfectly accurate to the movie, but you can easily slap on a pair of pants and a jacket, twist your hair into a braid, and buy a cheap bow and arrow set at the costume store, becoming the perfect embodiment of Katniss Everdeen.
- Sherlock Holmes
Who wouldn’t want to dress up as everyone’s favorite private eye? Solving mysteries, chasing down suspects day after day, all with the help of his partner, John Watson. And you can thank Arthur Conan Doyle for giving him such an easy outfit to replicate. An overcoat, a deerstalker (That’s the name of his hat. I had to look it up.), and a pipe are all you need to transform yourself into this famous detective. But remember, if you’re underage, please don’t actually light the pipe. Leave the legal issues to Holmes.
- Daisy Buchanan
Dressing up as this The Great Gatsby love interest is one surefire way to have a night of glitz and glam. With the sparkle of her signature gold dress, you’ll be sure to have all eyes on you. Add a pair of heels and tons of jewelry, not to mention the glittery headband, and you’re all set. If there’s anyone named Gatsby at that party, he won’t be able to keep his eyes off of you. Oh, but while you’re dressed as Daisy, it may be best to let someone else drive to the Halloween party.
- Willy Wonka
Wonka may be the most extravagant character on this list. He’s zany, theatrical, and maybe a little loony. He’s the perfect character to dress up as if you want to have fun on Halloween, and his costume is so bright and exciting. The purple coat might be a little difficult to come across, but nothing’s impossible, especially with this character. Get yourself a top hat and some Gobstoppers, and you’ve become the proud owner of your very own chocolate factory! Maybe you could even get some friends to join you and dress up as Oompa Loompas.
- Ponyboy Curtis
Stay gold with this character from the book The Outsiders. Embrace your inner greaser and throw on a t-shirt and a jean jacket, and like the name, lather your hair with tons of grease, slicking it back. Add some good pals and loyal brothers. Just remember to do it for Johnny, and that’s all you need to become everyone’s favorite greaser.
- Junie B. Jones
Dress up as this quirky children’s book character and you’ll be sure to have a great time. While it may be difficult to get into the mindset of a first grader, the costume is a piece of cake. A few mismatched pieces of brightly colored clothing should do the trick, as well as purple glasses and messy hair with a big bow in it. And just remember that the B stands for Beatrice, but you don’t like Beatrice. You just like B and that’s all.
- The Cat in the Hat
This wacky character is sure to bring some smiles to any Halloween party. If you’re looking for accuracy, you can easily portray this character with a fur suit, a big red bow, and the famous hat. But if you just want to dress up as the Cat to have a little fun, all you need besides the hat and bow are black pants and a black shirt with some white fabric on top. Don’t forget the white gloves! To get the full effect of this zany character, make sure to speak in rhymes the whole night. All of your friends will love you for it!
